This book analyzes how Leibniz reimagined power, moving from traditional scholastic definitions to an internalised "state space" within individuals. It traces the development of Leibniz’s legal and philosophical, examining how he connects power to modality, obligation, and his unique view of "concurrentism". Connelly examines how Leibniz's work, particularly his legal writings from the 1660s to 1690s, challenges conventional notions of power as a purely coercive or active force. Instead, Leibniz develops a framework where power is understood through modality – necessity, possibility, and contingency – creating a "state space" that dictates legal and moral obligations.
