Abstract

In her book, Natsuko Tsujimura talks about how silence is conceptualized and linguistically represented in the Japanese language. It associates the sounds of nature with silence, and onomatopoeia plays an important role in modeling silent scenes. There is a symbiotic relationship between sound and silence in the Japanese cultural experience. The book uses the tools of both linguistic and cultural analysis to explore a surprisingly rich range of representations of silence in the Japanese language and culture.
