Grammaticalization and Variation

Abstract

The monograph combines the study of the languages of the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica and the phenomenon of grammaticalization. The author examines the verbs of movement in several Maya languages and demonstrates how they are undergoing a process of grammaticalization, turning into real spatial markers. A detailed empirical analysis of Pan-Mayan verbs of movement and their grammaticalized variants is conducted. The book will be of interest to specialists in cognitive linguistics and Mesoamerican language researchers.
