| Abstract: | Demonstrative pronominal adverbs belong to the oldest layer of English vocabulary, but their qualitative variety, frequency of usage and functional load were the highest in the Middle English period during the shift of English grammar from the synthetic to the analytical type. At that time they served as flexible mediators providing gradualness of changes and uninterrupted communication. |
